HOW DOES VAMPLIERS® TECHNOLOGY WORK?
Both vertical and horizontal serrations grasp screw heads without slipping
ORDINARY PLIERS
Ordinary pliers jaws are lined with horizontal serrations. When you grasp and turn a screw head with ordinary pliers, the jaws slip and the screw remains stuck.
VAMPLIERS®
VERTICAL SERRATIONS
VAMPLIERS® specially-designed jaws generate gripping power
MAXIMIZES CONTACT
VAMPLIERS® perfectly-fit serrations maximize contact with no slippage.
VAMPLIERS® Technology utilizes a patented design with vertical and horizontal serrations that lead down the inside of the jaws to the tip of the pliers. These serrations are formed like teeth at the tip of the pliers to create the maximum amount of contact between the VAMPLIERS® and the screw, creating the perfect “bite” around the screw’s head.
- Combination of concave surface and horizontal serrations to maximize contact on the fastener.
- Ideal for single-sided, tamper-proof, Torx, and other unique fasteners.
- Perfect nose for access to confined spaces.
- Inner jaw, including wire cutters hardened to HRC60+/-2.
- Ergonomic elastomer handles for unmatched comfort.
- Made in Japan with hardened Kobe steel.

Sharpness
Sharpness is determined by the angle of the cutting edge. The sharper the cutting edge is, the faster the tool dulls. We select the best angle of the cutting edge for its application. Therefore, the shape and type of the cutting edge are of paramount importance in our shears design. Our cutting angles range from 10° to 50° based on application sharpness required.
Blade Shape
The edge of the blade is another factor that determines the maneuverability of shears. We always configure the best arrangement of bevel edge angle and its internal side to achieve the best cutting ability by flat grinding or hollow grinding. Serrations are fine lines or teeth ground into the edge of one blade. The serration holds the material, keeping it from being pushed forward.
Fulcrum Structure
Fulcrum-type Vampire Tools™ products use a shearing action that starts near the fulcrum and progresses toward the tips as the handles are squeezed. This action creates a force which often pushes harder and thicker materials toward the tips, requiring a sizable opposite force to accomplish cutting. The ratio of the relative distance of the squeezing point and cutting point form the fulcrum, which determines the force and movement ratio. When the squeezing point is at a greater distance from the fulcrum than the cutting point, the cutting force is greater and the movement is less than that applied to the handles.
This has two effects in selection. Relatively long handles provide greater control through less cutting movement and greater cutting force. The latter is often referred to as the mechanical advantage. As the cutting point moves toward the tip, the movement increases and the force decreases. Due to leverage ratio changes, the squeezing force required increases as cutting point approaches tips.
Thinner and narrower blades are less rigid than thicker and wider, plus they must fit between two or three dimensional obstacles without obscuring sight of cut. Excess length may limit maneuverability. Short lengths may produce jagged lines in long cuts due to repositioning between each cut segment. Cutting to the tips will only aggravate the situation. Cutting out intricate decals requires fine, short blades with clear vision of cutting point. In most cases, it is better to roughly cut pieces apart and trim them after. But this is limited by the minimum size that can be held. Dull scissors tear rather than cut. Spring opening can be good or bad dependent on situation and preference. Variation in style and characteristics are common.
Converting Design to Delivery
A process is the sequence and organization of all activities needed to convert material into products that were designed to meet customer demand. Then there is a final check or inspection to make sure that it meets standards for quality, quantity, lead time, or timing.
1. Blade Shaping
The shears are blanked out. Strips of steel are cut out in the form of a shears. The cheaper version of the “blanked” shears are then ground into shape so that it is difficult to sustain precision. We employ a “fine blanking” technique to shape the blade and punch screw holes. The process is capable of producing a sheet metal part with completely smooth edges. It needs no second machining and grinding. This means that not all blanked shears are cheap.
Blanking Process
Single Part
Single Part Transfer: A single part transfer is a method in which single parts are moved from station to station for blanking and metal forming. The relative dimension of shape and holes is in loose tolerance.
Single Stroke: Blanking and forming in one die stroke. The relative dimension of shape and holes is in tight tolerance.
Progressive
This is a forming process that utilizes a series of stamping stations to perform simultaneous operations on sheet metal. The final metal workpiece is developed as the strip of metal is processed through the stamping die. It’s low cost. However, the grain will be across the blades. This will reduce shearing force of blades and the blades may snap off.
Fine-Blanking
Compared with the fine-blanking, conventional stamping is found to have about 1/3 shearing edge and their shape is bowed whilst those produced by the fine-blanking are found to have 100% shearing edge, flat shape, and accurate dimensions. Furthermore, in applying the fine-blanking technology, the clearance between the punch and the die is much smaller.
Advantages
By applying the fine-blanking technology, the significant improvement of the component should be obvious. As the components are designed with a good shape, smooth surface, and precise size, they can be ready for assembly without any further secondary operations. The productivity cycle time is increased and the component costs are significantly reduced.
2. Heat Treatment
Heat treating is the operation of heating and cooling a metal in its solid state to change its physical properties. For example, steel can be hardened to resist cutting action and abrasion, or it can be softened to permit machining. With heat treatment, internal stresses may be removed, grain size reduced, toughness increased, or a hard surface produced on a ductile interior.
Continuous Heat Treatment
The shears are carried on a conveyor side by side into a heating tunnel. Due to its productivity and cost efficiency, this is the most popular way to harden steel for general application. It minimizes oxygen contact with the parts with a fire curtain.
Vacuum Heat Treatment
For better quality, the scissors are placed in a vacuum chamber where the oxygen is extracted and heated up. The key advantage of vacuum heating is making a small grain structure that is tougher than one with large grain structure, so that it makes the shears sharper, more durable and more corrosion resistant.
It is very important to minimize oxygen contact with the parts. If steel comes in contact with oxygen in heat treating, the carbon will dissipate into the atmosphere, forming a decarburized layer of steel. This will result in the scissors’ edges cutting into each other and dulling very fast.
Induction Heat Treatment
For special application, some of our shears are double heat treated. For a proper tension between blades, and because the metal behind the cutting edge has the job of transmitting the cutting forces and standing up to the stresses, the shears are first hardened to become hard and brittle, then subsequently tempered to relieve quenching stresses and to provide a limited but necessary degree of toughness and ductility to protect the part from cracking.
3. Grinding & Polish
Grinding means to abrade, to wear away by friction, or to sharpen. In manufacturing, it refers to the removal of metal by a rotating abrasive wheel. Wheel action is vaguely similar to a milling cutter, which is considered a multiple cutting point tool. However, a grinding wheel is composed of many small grains bonded together, each one acting as a miniature cutting point. The grinding wheel is considered to have an infinite number of cutting points.
The finishing parts on grinding machines have cylindrical, flat, or internal surfaces. The surface of the part largely selects the grinding machine. Machines designed for special functions, such as tool grinding or cutting off, are designated according to their operation. The hardened blades then go through several grinding and polish processes.
Bevel Grinding to the Backside of Blade
There are flat-ground bevels and hollow-ground bevels. In shearing action, the shears with hollow-ground bevels are with less force. The bevel angle, small angle/less force or larger angle/more force, is required in closing a shears. But when determining the bevel angle, we have to consider the thickness of blade. The thinner blade with a larger angle will scarify the clamping force of blades through the entire length of cut or else tearing may occur rather than cutting.
Cutting Edge Grinding
The cutting angle shears may have a very thin or thick blade with a different cutting angle. Both blades can be cutting blades in the same or different angle, or one of them is anvil in any combination. Most are designed for specific uses; preferences are determined by the end user.
Besides the above-mentioned various cutting angles with different applications, the shears also can be distinguished between straight blades and curved blades. The curved blades offer consistent closing angles to reduce a force that pushes the workpiece toward the tips. It can be one curve or a combination of different curves.
Inside Chamfer: The shears designed for garden use, or for any other rough cuts, may cross-cut its blades due to the cross force. To avoid a cross-cut and chipping of the blade, an inside chamfer is required at the tip of cutting edge.
Polish: For an easy cut and to maximize the stainless feature, the surface should be highly buffed. After grinding, the grit leaves a rough surface which looks like a ragged groove under microscope. Moisture or other foreign particles can be trapped in the cracks and the steel could get rusty.
Notch: When cutting a tougher or rounded shape workpiece, it is best to place the workpiece as close as possible to the fulcrum. The tougher the workpiece, the harder the force will push it out of position. The notch can hold the workpiece and reduce the closing angle of shears in turn with less squeezing force required.
Serrations: These are fine lines or teeth ground into the edge of one blade. The serration holds the workpiece, keeping it from being pushed forward.
Hollow Grinding in Inner Blade
The high-quality shears made by Vampire Tools™ are hollow grounded. The advantage of hollow ground shears is to reduce the friction resistance and prevent the material jammed in shearing action. This not only increases productivity, but also reduces operator fatigue.
Vampire Tools™ designs their own machine, which can be adjusted to a desired hollow depth, and processes a consistent hollow side of blades for quality.
Vampire Tools™ are also able to grind spiral hollow blades. This can vary by the clearance angle on the cutting edge and compensate the squeezing force while the cutting point is moving forward to tips of shears.
4. Surface Treatment
The process of surface treatments, more formally known as surface engineering, tailors the surfaces of engineering materials to:
- Control friction and wear.
- Improve corrosion resistance.
- Vary appearance, e.g., color and roughness.
- Change physical property, e.g., conductivity, resistivity, and reflection.
Ultimately, the functions and/or service lives of the materials can be improved.
Other Surface Finishing
Sandblasting is used to clean, deburr, or etch a surface. The effect is similar to that of using sandpaper but provides a more even finish with no problems at corners or crannies.
Tumbling finishing is used to burnish, deburr, clean, radius, de-flash, descale, remove rust, polish, brighten, prepare parts for further finishing, and break off die cast runners.
5. Handle Molding
To provide a comfortable grip, Vampire Tools™ adopts a human-centered design concept. On traditional shears, the handles are even, meaning that both handles look the same and are the same length. One of the first and most popular ergonomic shears developed was the offset shears, where the thumb ring was brought forward. This allows your thumb to have a more natural movement and won’t force it opposite the ring finger when closing. It is best to cut with the wrist straight.
In addition to the shape of handle, the material is also very important. For different applications, there are some different concerns, such as skin acid, oil, electrostatic, toxic, recyclable, etc. Its physical feature is unbreakable, non-slippery, and easy to grip.
6. Assembly and Inspection
The tension system screw and nut and/or with washer assembly is not only pivotal for blades, but also provides an important function clamping the blades together while in shearing action. Thus, the material of tension system has to endure tensile force, pulling force, and shearing force that reverses back to the tension system. In addition, this mechanism is adjustable to stabilize the blades. SUS 302, SUS 303, SUS 304 and AISI 435 are good choices for these components.
The scissors with a screw mechanism provide good serviceability. It is the nature that the shears will wear off over time. Some types of the shears need to be taken apart for regrinding and readjusting. The inexpensive scissors that are riveted cannot be properly grounded and readjusted. After assembly, to give the shears a smooth, efficient run with less force, adjusting and straightening the scissors is craftwork that only few people can master.
Surface. Some shears are plated with chromium for specific application. To maximize the stainless feature, the surface is highly buffed. Scissors made of non-corrosive stainless steel are either burnished or sandblasted to give a fine matte effect, coated in Teflon (black or colored).
Quality. To ensure a high-level of consistent quality, Vampire Tools™ executes thorough, extensive control of the material, hardness, and grinding of the scissors and all craftwork in whole process.
7. Maintenance
One of the most common types of corrosion on shears is pitting due to lack of cleanliness. To prevent the metal from excess oxygen requires you to maintain the corrosion-resistant surface. Keep shears clean and dry and oil the shears after cleaning.

vShears™ are second to none in terms of material, workmanship, quality, and durability. Our suite of products are finetuned for cutting Kevlar, carbon fiber, glass fiber, plastic, canvas, upholstery, headlines, cloth, string, rope, electrical wiring, paper, fabric, and many other tough materials.
Learn how to take care of your shears the Vampire Tools™ way!
For mechanical, electrical, sewing, kitchen, and multipurpose applications, our vShears feature an ergonomically optimized design to maximize comfort during extended use and repetitive cutting motion. The finger ring offers plenty of room for the users’ left or right thumb to maneuver without overextending. The finger insert allows the user to place fingers in from either hand to grip the shears from a variety of angles. Blade serrations allow gripping of materials without slippage. Tension screw is a SUS 302 stainless steel cold forged bolt.
vShears use high carbon alloy steel with Molybdenum and Vanadium. Molybdenum offers the lowest thermal expansion coefficient among metals used in blades, allowing it to withstand extreme temperatures without becoming malleable. With a Mohs hardness of 5.5, Molybdenum is resistant to corrosion and scratches from most materials. Vanadium offers increased tensile strength to steel, ductility, and resistance to wear and tear. This blade material offers a cutting edge hardness of Vickers Hardness (HV) 1200 and a Hot-rolled coil (HRC) of 60-62. With higher carbon content, steel develops the ability to harden and withstand higher temperatures of heat.
THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS (TPE):
vShears use TPE for handles. As a polymer material, TPE provides shorter fabrication times, resulting in reduced energy consumption and simpler processing. TPE also provides great electrical insulation.
Titanium Bonded®:
Titanium Bonded is not painted or plated, but an application of a unique formulation of titanium and chromium nitride to the surface of cutting blades that actually penetrates and treats the metal to create a permanent bond. The patented Titanium Bonding process provides the following benefits: corrosion resistance, adhesive resistance, and the process itself makes the stainless steel 3x harder than untreated stainless — providing a blade that stays sharper longer.
Titanium Non-Stick:
Our proprietary new coating bonds Titanium with a non-stick formula. Highly resistant to adhesives, including tape, glue, Velcro®, and natural adhesive substances such as sap, this is a durable micro-ceramic coating that will not wear off for up to 100,000 cuts. It is 5X harder than stainless steel alone and will stay sharper longer.
Carbonitride Titanium®:
Carbonitride Titanium is one of the hardest surface treatments containing titanium. Harder than carbide. Harder than chrome. Our proprietary process creates a permanent molecular bond with the blade surface. It will not flake, blister, chip, or peel. A complex crystalline structure forms which protects the blade surface against wear, staining, and damage. Patent pending technology.
Hot-Forged:
Vampire Tools™ continues to hot-forge its tools to produce a superior product from high quality rods or strips of steel, heated in a furnace and then forged from a drop hammer into the desired shape. This is an expensive process, but it is recognized as the best method to produce quality blades.
Tempered:
Vampire Tools™ heat treats its scissors, shears, and tools until they are harder than some striking tools, and then tempers the steel until it is as pliable as spring steel. After hours of controlled processing, the steel is at its most desirable state and ready for grinding.
Precision Ground:
Vampire Tools™ uses knowledge, skills, and methods developed since 1877, combined with the latest technology available to precision grind the various surfaces of its scissors, shears, and tools to exacting standards.
Bows:
The bows are the rings on the shears or scissors which you put your fingers through. They help you grip the tools, open and close them with one hand, and should be comfortable and form-fitting. Our bows are especially designed for each style of tool to make them the best-suited to your needs, as well as for the task at hand.
Blades:
The art of assembling two blades and making them cut their full length properly is one of the most difficult to master, and it is this art that immediately distinguishes Vampire Tools™ over others. Our tools provide a long, smooth, uniform, yet effortless cut, all the way to the tips.
Backbone:
Backbone refers to the thickness of the blade. The Vampire Tools™ backbone is the strength behind the cut. A thick backbone provides an unparalleled rigidity so the blades will not separate while cutting multiple layers of material.
Run:
The “run” is the “feel” you get when you cut with a pair of scissors or shears. A “good run” gives you an even, clean cut for the full length of the blade without hesitation or roughness. Vampire Tools™ finetunes the run of each of its shears to give you the best performance and feel available.
Certified Double-Plated:
Vampire Tools™ has always double-plated its hot-forged tools, using nickel for luster and chrome for durability, ensuring you a product that is rust and stain resistant. Other companies often only nickel plate their blades. Then they must remove the nickel plating from the inside of the blades because it peels. In that case, you have pretty blades on the outside with bare steel, which rusts and stains on the inside. Our process costs us more but ensures you a product with maximum service life. The Vampire Tools™ certified, double-plated process is your guarantee that these tools are the very best available.
High Carbon Cutlery Grade Steel:
Quality tools start with quality steel. The more carbon in the steel, the longer the life of the tool. Cutlery grade steel usually means high uniformity and strict control over trace elements in the steel. Vampire Tools™ uses high carbon cutlery steel to ensure the best quality tools possible.
Thru-Hardened:
All Vampire Tools™ hot-forged scissors and shears are thru-hardened, rather than case-hardened, which only hardens the surface. Having thru-hardened scissors and shears means that after re-sharpening, you still have a hard steel blade, and scissors and shears that will hold their edge. And if they do become dull, they can be re-sharpened over and over again.
Heat-Inducted Blades:
Heat induction is a triple-heat process. The base steel is heated, then the steel supporting the blade edges is heated, and then there is a final heat treatment on the blade edges providing up to a 62Rc. This triple-heat process is a precise heating technology applied to a specific area of the blades, providing a stronger, longer lasting cutting edge.
Knife Edge:
“Knife edge” shears have a more acute angle on the cutting edge than “regular edged” shears. They make cutting thick, dense materials such as carpets, belting, or cording easier and put less stress and fatigue on the user.
Adjustable:
Shears with a nut and bolt assembly can be adjusted to cut and run the way you prefer them for your particular needs.
SureSet®:
A premium adjustable fastener that provides a locking pivot reduces friction when opening and closing and allows tension adjustment with only one hand.
Heavy Duty:
Wider, thicker blades help prevent spreading at the tips and give full cutting action even when cutting thick, dense materials. These shears have an adjustable bolt and nut assembly. Large comfortable handles and good balance help reduce blisters, calluses, and hand fatigue.
High Leverage / Vampire Tools™ Backbone:
Extra cutting power is developed by changing the normal power ratio of the tool. Other manufacturers do this by giving you longer handles or shorter cutting blades. Vampire Tools™ provides the ultimate in high-leverage cutting by increasing the back-bone width of the blade so you get high performance and still retain the full length of cut you need.
Serration:
Some material and round objects (such as polyesters and sheet metal or rope, hose, wire, and Kevlar®) tend to slip ahead of the cutting blades and need to be held by serrated edges while being cut. The types of serration Vampire Tools™ uses on its tools have proven to be the best during many years of on the job testing. Vampire Tools™ serration proves for a perfect cut every time. Kevlar® is a registered trademark of the E.I. DuPont Company.
Transfer of Power™:
Transfer of Power is a technology that only Vampire Tools™ offers. In testing, Vampire Tools™ examined how the bows, fulcrum, and blades can flex during cutting. In order to eliminate this from happening, Vampire Tools™ instituted ridged bows, oversized fulcrum, and industrial strong blade backbones, eliminating nearly all of the flex in a scissor, shear, or snip therefore transferring all of the power to the cutting edges.
Glass Filled Nylon:
Glass filled nylon bows and handles are found on many of the Vampire Tools™ tools. Vampire Tools™ adds glass-filled materials to polypropylene, ABS, and other substrates in order to provide the strongest, most ridged handles and bows available.
Spring-Assisted:
Spring-Assisted scissors and shears allow users to reduce a portion of the cutting motion since the handles spring open. To cut, the user only needs to squeeze the handles, therefore reducing fatigue from having to open and close the scissors manually.
NSF®:
NSF International, the public health and safety company™, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, is the world leader in standards development, product certification, education, and risk-management for public health and safety. For 60 years, NSF has been committed to public health, safety, and protection of the environment. While focusing on food, water, indoor air, and the environment, NSF develops national standards, provides learning opportunities through its Center for Public Health Education, and provides third-party conformity assessment services. NSF® is a registered trademark of NSF International.
Bamboo:
Bamboo is an environmentally sustainable organic material that regenerates itself faster than any wood. This means we are preserving the environment by using a material that regenerates quickly. Bamboo handles are also moisture and stain resistant while providing a fantastic gripping surface.
